I assume by now everyone has seen or heard about the Sabres-Sens game. I saw the highlights on Sports Center and figured they were leaving a lot out. I just found the full thing on youtube and I think way too much is being made of it. It wasn't THAT big a deal.
I do, however have a few thoughts:

1) The hit that started it all, by the Senators' Chris Neil, I did not feel was an illegal hit. Unnecessary, absolutely. And I'd have no problem with how the Sabres handled if Lindy Ruff wasn't their coach.
2) Ruff is insanely hypocritical. I remember in the playoffs last year when the Flyers did the same thing: sent out their tough guys against the Sabres skill players. Ruff then called the Flyers "idiots" and I think something like classless for doing it. So, basically it's OK for the Sabres to do it, but if it's done TO Buffalo, it's not OK. Turnaround is fair play.
3) Like I said, if it were any coach but Lindy Ruff, I'd be fine with the Sabres sending out their big boys. Despite the fact that I think Ruff is a hypocrite, I also think the Sens coach is a moron. He had to know what was coming, and he puts out guys like Heatley and Spezza, two top players in the NHL. What did he expect after one of his goons knocked out Buffalo's captain?
4) The Senators should be ashamed of themselves for not jumping in to help goaltender Ray Emery when a Buffalo player jumped him. After Emery beat the crap out of Sens' goalie Martin Biron, Andrew Peters started swinging on Emery. Although it's an unwritten rule that you don't fight a goalie unless you're a goalie, too, it's also an unwritten rule that if your goalie is involved with another player, you jump in and save him. The Senators didn't do that and shouldn't be proud of that fact.
5) Why do goaltenders ALWAYS get ejected from the game any more if they fight? They were just doing the same thing every other player on the ice was doing. They should get a five-minute major for fighting and two minutes for leaving the crease. End of penalties unless they do something to warrant a game misconduct. Neither Emery nor Biron did so.
6) I think too much is being made out of this. I've seen things 500 times worse than this one. And I'm not even going that far back in time. The Flyers/Senators brawl a few years ago was far worse (and even that one I thought was a little overrated). And the brawls that the Red Wings and Avs used to have sure were a helluva lot more vicious.

I would like to see more of this in hockey, I must say. The game, quite frankly, is getting boring to me. These new rules have made for scoring every 10 minutes. I remember when it was rare to see a four-goal performance by one team. I also remember when standing up for your teammates was a good thing and you didn't get suspended for it. The NHL tried to get new fans by changing the game and making it more about the offense and speed, but they lost more long-term fans than made new ones. The lockout didn't help them either. Now to get fans back, they need to let the fists fly. More fighting will equal more fans, guaranteed. I'm not saying bring back the Broad Street Bullies. Don't turn it into a boxing match. Maybe more 80's/early 90's style hockey is what I'm looking for. A mix of skill and toughness. Because what we have now is just not cutting it.
